PHOENIX — The LA Sparks came into Mortgage Matchup Center and earned every point. Dearica Hamby was dominant from the opening tip to the final whistle, Kelsey Plum kept the offense moving, and the Sparks held off a persistent Phoenix Mercury team 97-88 in front of a sellout crowd of 10,953 to improve to 2-3 on the season.
It was not a blowout start. Phoenix stayed within striking distance for three quarters behind Alyssa Thomas and Kahleah Copper, and the Mercury pulled within nine in the fourth before LA sealed it at the line. But every time the Sparks needed a big play, Hamby delivered one.
Hamby Was the Story
Dearica Hamby finished with 27 points and 15 rebounds and was the engine that kept LA’s offense humming whenever Phoenix threatened to make it interesting. She scored in the post, cleaned up on the offensive glass, converted at the free throw line when it mattered, and capped the third quarter with a buzzer-beating three to put the Sparks up 82-70.
Her fourth-quarter performance sealed it. With Phoenix chipping away, Hamby kept responding. She drew fouls, hit free throws, and gave LA the cushion it needed to protect the lead. By the time Mercury got within nine on a Copper three with under four minutes left, the moment had already passed. Hamby had 11 free throw attempts on the night and converted enough of them to keep the game out of reach.
Plum Ran the Show
Kelsey Plum was every bit as important as the final line suggests. She finished with 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting, going 4-of-10 from three, and dished out seven assists while logging 33-plus minutes. She hit back-to-back threes in the second quarter that broke the game open, and her connection with Hamby was the Sparks’ most reliable weapon all night.
Her shot-making in the second period was the turning point. Plum found Rae Burrell for a momentum-shifting three off a Plum assist to push the lead to 49-35, then kept the Mercury defense moving and created enough space for LA to build a 60-43 halftime advantage. When Phoenix made adjustments, Plum kept finding answers.
LA Built the Lead and Mostly Held It
The Sparks led 25-24 after a chaotic first quarter that featured 11 lead changes and five ties. Neither team could string stops together early, and Copper’s late free throws evened it up at 24 before Hamby went to the line to give LA the quarter lead.
The second quarter was where the game changed. Plum caught fire from three, Brink finished a layup and-one, and Burrell knocked down a corner three off a Plum feed to push the margin to 14. LA went into halftime up 60-43. The third quarter was tighter, with Thomas and Copper keeping Mercury within range, but Hamby’s buzzer three made it a 12-point game heading into the fourth.
Phoenix made one final push, trimming it to nine on a Thomas putback with two minutes left. But LA hit its free throws when it mattered and forced enough Mercury turnovers late to close it out. The Sparks finished with 17 turnovers, giving up 18 points off those miscues, but Phoenix’s 13 turnovers and 42 percent shooting kept them from closing the gap.
Thomas and Copper Made LA Work
The Sparks had no easy night defending. Alyssa Thomas was a problem all game, finishing with 23 points and seven assists, attacking the rim and creating in the mid-range while keeping the Mercury’s halfcourt offense organized. She kept Phoenix alive through three quarters and made LA uncomfortable every time the lead crept toward double digits.
Kahleah Copper added 22 points on 7-of-20 shooting and 7-of-10 from the line, drawing fouls consistently and refusing to let the Sparks coast. Her flagrant foul in the second quarter cost the Mercury two free points and possession, a swing that helped LA extend the lead at a critical moment. Jovana Nogic provided 15 off the bench for Phoenix, but it was not enough to overcome a Sparks team that executed when it had to.
Cameron Brink: The Good and the Complicated
Cameron Brink finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 6 turnovers in 19 minutes, and that line tells the whole story of her night. She was impactful defensively, protecting the rim and disrupting Mercury actions in the paint. But the turnovers kept costing LA possessions, and foul trouble limited her availability in the second half. When Brink is on, she changes the game. Thursday she gave LA both versions.
