No Mercy in Houston. The Lakers Close the Door On the Rockets

HOUSTON — LeBron James walked into the Toyota Center on Friday night with one mission: end this series. He did exactly that.

James poured in 28 points and dished out 8 assists in a commanding performance as the Los Angeles Lakers eliminated the Houston Rockets 98-78 in Game 6, advancing to the Western Conference Semifinals to face the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Lakers, who led the series 3-2 coming into Friday, never let Houston breathe after the first quarter, turning an 18-point halftime lead into a wire-to-wire statement victory.

Rui Hachimura was the unsung hero of the closeout, finishing with a game-high 21 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three. Austin Reaves added 15 points and continued to demonstrate why his return from injury has been a catalyst for this Lakers run. The trio of James, Hachimura, and Reaves combined for 64 points on a night when Houston simply had no answers.

HOUSTON’S HOUSE, LA’S GAME | LAL 23 – HOU 18
End of One

Houston’s crowd was electric from the opening tip, and the Rockets gave them reason to be. Reed Sheppard found Tari Eason for a corner three on the first possession, and a LeBron layup answer could not prevent the Rockets from building an early advantage. Eason dunked off an Amen Thompson assist, and the Toyota Center roared as Houston pushed the lead to 16-11.

Then Los Angeles flipped a switch. The Lakers went on a 9-0 run fueled by Alperen Sengun interior buckets, a J. Smith Jr. three, and Eason’s own running dunk off a Thompson dish. By the time Hachimura hit a corner three off a Luke Kennard assist, the Lakers had turned a five-point deficit into a 23-18 lead. Sengun was a monster on the glass with five defensive rebounds, but the Rockets shot poorly on possessions that could have extended their lead.

LEBRON TAKES OVER | LAL 49 – HOU 31
Halftime

The second quarter belonged to LeBron James, and it was not particularly close.

James scored 15 points in the period alone: a step-back three, a turnaround fadeaway, a running layup, and two free throws. He finished the half with 18 points and 5 assists. Every time Houston mounted any semblance of a run, James answered personally, and the Lakers extended their lead from five to as many as eighteen, holding a commanding 49-31 advantage at the break.

Houston’s offense fell apart. The Rockets had two shot clock violations, Sengun coughed up a pair of turnovers, and Dorian Finney-Smith was whistled for a charge. Reaves quietly added 7 points in the quarter on back-to-back finger rolls, and his two blocks in the final minutes were a defensive exclamation point on a dominant half. Marcus Smart chipped in 2 blocks and 2 steals across the opening 24 minutes.

The lone bright spot for Houston was Jabari Smith Jr.’s thunderous tip dunk at the 6:07 mark that momentarily woke the crowd, but the Lakers never allowed the Rockets to cut the deficit below 13 in the second.

RUI HEATS UP, HOUSTON RUNS OUT OF ANSWERS | LAL 71 – HOU 55
End of Three

If Houston harbored any halftime hope, LeBron extinguished it within ninety seconds of the third quarter opening. He opened the period with a turnaround fadeaway, and the Lakers pushed their lead to 20 before the Rockets had time to process what was happening.

Hachimura caught fire from deep, finishing the period 4-of-5 from three and giving Los Angeles a reliable spacing weapon that Houston simply could not account for. Reaves was a menace in the pick-and-roll, getting downhill consistently and racking up 8 points in the quarter alone. He finished three quarters with 15 points and three blocks, a quietly remarkable all-around performance.

Houston showed fight. Sengun posted 8 defensive rebounds in the quarter and had 14 points through three quarters. Tari Eason delivered a steal-and-dunk sequence and a three-pointer off a Sengun assist to trim the deficit to 16 heading into the fourth. Foul trouble loomed large for the Rockets, with Amen Thompson, Jabari Smith Jr. each carrying four personal fouls into the final frame.

GARBAGE TIME NEVER FELT SO GOOD | LAL 98 – HOU 78
Final

Hachimura opened the fourth with a three-pointer on the Lakers’ first possession to push the lead to 19, and the game was effectively over. Houston never found a response.

LeBron continued to direct traffic with a driving hook, two free throws, a finger roll, and a dime to Jaxson Hayes for an alley-oop dunk that made it 93-67, before taking his seat with just over three minutes remaining to a standing ovation from the small contingent of Lakers fans who made the trip to Houston. He finished with 28 points, 8 assists, and 7 rebounds. This was LeBron at his most methodical and most inevitable.

Smith Jr. fouled out with five minutes left and Thompson fouled out shortly after, stripping Houston of its two most dangerous weapons. Smart hit back-to-back threes off assists from Hachimura and James to officially salt the game at 91-65. The bench mob handled the rest.

Bronny James, Dalton Knecht, Adou Thiero, and Nick Smith Jr. closed out the final three minutes for L.A. Thiero converted a tip dunk to push it to 98-69, and a Clint Capela putback layup closed the scoring at 98-78. The sellout crowd of 18,055 at the Toyota Center quietly filed out as the Lakers celebrated on the floor.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

LeBron James | Forward | Los Angeles Lakers

28 PTS | 7 REB | 8 AST | 37 MIN | 10-25 FG | 2-5 3P | 6-8 FT

This was a vintage LeBron James playoff performance. He outscored the entire Houston Rockets starting lineup through three quarters, orchestrated the offense with surgical precision, and hit the biggest shots when the Lakers needed them most. At year 23 of his career, James remains the most complete player in these playoffs — and the Thunder await.

SERIES NOTES & CONTEXT

The Rockets forced a Game 6 after winning Games 4 and 5, both without Kevin Durant, who missed four of the series’ five games with a left ankle sprain. Houston’s Jabari Smith Jr. famously declared his team was ‘obviously the better team’ despite facing a 3-1 series deficit — a moment that circulated widely but ultimately went unanswered on the court.

LeBron James’ teams have never blown a 2-0 series lead across his 23-year career. That streak remains intact. The Lakers now advance to face the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Western Conference’s top seed, who swept the Phoenix Suns in the First Round. Game 1 of that series is scheduled for Tuesday.
