CARSON — Joseph Paintsil gave the LA Galaxy the lead. Guilherme Santos took it back. When the final whistle blew at Dignity Health Sports Park on Saturday, neither side could find a winner, and the two teams walked away with a point apiece in a 1-1 MLS regular season draw.
LA controlled much of the first half, generating wave after wave of chances and riding a Paintsil goal to a 1-0 halftime lead. Houston responded through Guilherme Santos just before the break, and despite the Galaxy’s best efforts over the final 45 minutes, Jonathan Bond and the Dynamo defense held firm.
Paintsil Breaks Through
It was not for lack of trying in the first half. Gabriel Pec tested Jonathan Bond early and often, with three separate attempts blocked by Antonio Carlos alone before the half-hour mark. Elijah Wynder struck the right post in the 18th minute, a moment that summed up the Galaxy’s frustrating first half of attacking play.
The breakthrough came in the 30th minute. Paintsil received inside the box, turned, and rifled a right-footed finish into the top left corner. It was the kind of shot that matched the moment: decisive and clean.
Santos Answers Before the Break
The Galaxy’s lead lasted eleven minutes. In the 41st minute, Houston strung together a quick sequence that ended with Guilherme Santos stepping into a right-footed shot from outside the box. The ball carried to the middle right of the net, and just like that, the match was level heading into halftime.
It was a low-probability chance on paper, a 3 percent expected goals reading, but Santos made it count. The assist came from Jack McGlynn, with Antonio Carlos picking up the secondary credit for his role in the buildup.
Galaxy Push, Bond Stands Tall
The second half belonged to LA in terms of pressure. Matheus Nascimento, Edwin Cerrillo, Harbor Miller, and Gabriel Pec all tested Bond in a frantic stretch between the 77th and 86th minutes, and Bond turned away every one. Miller’s attempt from the center of the box carried a 22 percent xG and Bond blocked it. Pec’s header from the right side carried 5 percent and Bond read it cleanly. Nascimento’s effort from the right side came with 9 percent and Bond smothered it.
LA worked nine corners on the night and finished with a flurry, but Houston’s defense, aided by Felipe Andrade’s physical presence despite a yellow card in the 57th minute, absorbed the late pressure and protected the draw.
The Bottom Line
The Galaxy dominated stretches of the match but could not find the second goal their attacking volume deserved. Pec was lively throughout, generating five combined shot attempts. Paintsil’s goal was legitimate quality. The issue was not effort or creativity; it was finishing in a match where Houston’s goalkeeper earned his clean sheet on merit.
One point at home is not the result LA wanted. The Galaxy will need to sharpen their conversion when chances arrive in bunches, because against Houston on Saturday, they had plenty.
