KANSAS CITY — The LA Galaxy had chances. They had corners, free kicks, and a second half where they threw bodies forward in search of a way back. But on a Wednesday night at Sporting Park, Sporting Kansas City made the most of what they had, and the Galaxy had no answer for it.
SKC won 3-1, completing the regular-season sweep of LA and handing the Galaxy their most lopsided road loss of 2026.
The opening 30 minutes were competitive, with the Galaxy generating early looks: five corners in the first half alone, and a pair of Mauricio Cuevas attempts in the first 20 minutes that Stefan Cleveland handled. But it was Sporting who broke through first. In the 32nd minute, Capita Capemba collected a Calvin Harris ball and finished left-footed from the center of the box to the lower right corner. Clinical finish, well-earned lead.
The Galaxy barely had time to regroup. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Dejan Joveljić made it 2-0. The former Galaxy striker tucked a right-footed shot to the top of the net, with Harris and Zorhan Bassong combining to set him up. It was the kind of dagger that changes a game’s entire complexion heading into the locker room.
Head coach Greg Vanney made two adjustments at the break, bringing on Elijah Wynder for Harbor Miller, but the Galaxy’s rhythm never fully arrived in the second half. They had their moments: a Marco Reus shot blocked in the 54th minute, Joseph Paintsil earning free kicks, Erik Thommy (on after a 64th-minute triple substitution) testing Cleveland three times in quick succession between the 76th and 78th minutes. But SKC’s goalkeeper answered every time.
Then came Harris. In the 70th minute, he capped a complete performance, having assisted on both first-half goals, with a right-footed finish to the bottom left corner off a combination from Manu García and Jacob Bartlett. At 3-0, the match was finished as a contest.
The Galaxy salvaged something in the 89th minute when Gabriel Pec, LA’s most dangerous player all night and one who earned a yellow card for his trouble, curled a left-footed shot from the right half-space into the top left corner from a near-impossible angle. Pure Pec.
But the final score was 3-1. The scoring streak lives. The result stings.
LA now heads to Seattle on Saturday for the third leg of a difficult road trip, looking for a response at Lumen Field.
