OKLAHOMA CITY — For one half, the Los Angeles Lakers looked like a team that believed. They clawed out of an early hole, outscored the Oklahoma City Thunder 35-30 in the second quarter, and went into the locker room up 58-57, ahead in a playoff game for the first time in this series. Then the third quarter started, and everything unraveled.
OKC turned what was a one-point deficit at halftime into a 13-point advantage by the end of the third quarter, then closed it out with ease. Final score: Thunder 125, Lakers 107. Oklahoma City leads the series 2-0. Game 3 is Saturday in Los Angeles, and the Lakers need a miracle.
Thunder Out of the Gates, Lakers Answer
The game opened in all-too-familiar fashion. Oklahoma City jumped out to an 11-4 lead inside the first four minutes behind Isaiah Hartenstein’s early dominance in the paint and a three from Chet Holmgren. The Lakers weathered it. Austin Reaves started attacking the rim, Rui Hachimura got hot from the floor, and LA clawed back to tie things at 16 before a late OKC surge pushed the Thunder up 27-23 at the end of the first quarter.
Hartenstein was the story of the early minutes. The big man finished with six points and three blocks in limited first-half action, turning the paint into his personal territory. LeBron James had answers on the other end, a cut layup off a Marcus Smart assist, a drive here, a jumper there, but the Lakers shot just 40 percent in the opening frame and committed costly turnovers in the final two minutes, including a Reaves bad pass that Caruso converted into a running dunk for SGA.
A Second Quarter Worth Remembering
Oklahoma City came out of the first-quarter break with more momentum, quickly extending the lead to eight points at 31-23. Ajay Mitchell was relentless off the bench, finding gaps in the Lakers’ defense repeatedly. It looked like the blowout from Game 1 might be repeating itself.
It did not. The Lakers flipped the script.
Luke Kennard hit a three. Smart converted an and-one. Reaves kept attacking the basket, finishing tough and getting to the line. LeBron facilitated everything, racking up assists while doing just enough scoring to keep OKC honest. LA tied it at 49, then kept going. Hachimura drilled a three to put the Lakers up 52-49. SGA answered with a turnaround jumper to tie it at 52. Jaxon Hayes threw down an alley-oop off LeBron to go back up two. Alex Caruso hit a three to retie it at 55. LeBron dunked home an alley-oop off Reaves to make it 57-55. Hartenstein tied it at 57. Then, with 16 seconds left, Hayes hit a six-foot jumper to send LA to halftime ahead for the first time all series, 58-57.
That was LA’s best quarter of the series. The first time they outscored OKC in any frame. The first time either team scored 30 in a quarter. Reaves led the Lakers with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting at the break. Hachimura had 11. LeBron had 10 points and five assists. For one half, it felt like a series.
The Third Quarter Killed Them
The Lakers took a one-point lead into halftime and came out of it looking like a completely different team, in the worst way.
Holmgren’s turnaround fadeaway opened third-quarter scoring, giving OKC the lead at 59-58 just 17 seconds in. Hachimura answered with a three to put LA back up two. SGA hit free throws to tie it at 61. Reaves hit a floater to go up 63-61. Then came the sequence that, in hindsight, defined the game.
SGA committed a flagrant foul on Reaves with 10:34 remaining in the third. It was his fourth personal foul. Caruso picked up a technical in the same sequence. Reaves stepped to the line and hit all three free throws to push the lead to 66-61, LA’s biggest of the game. It should have been a turning point in the Lakers’ favor.
It wasn’t. Dort hit a three. OKC cut it to 66-64. Reaves answered with a pullup three, pushing LA back up five at 69-64. That was the last time the Lakers held a lead of more than two. Holmgren drove for a dunk off a Mitchell pass to make it 69-66. Mitchell got a layup to tie it at 68. Then OKC took over for good.
Mitchell kept attacking. Jared McCain hit timely jumpers off the bench. The Lakers turned it over, with Reaves alone having five turnovers in the third quarter, and OKC converted every one. The Thunder outscored LA 29-11 over the final 8:15 to take a 93-80 lead into the fourth. A quarter that started with so much promise ended as the turning point in the series.
Fourth Quarter Formality
The Lakers showed brief life in the fourth. Hachimura hit a pullup to cut it to 11. Smart hit free throws. LeBron drove and then stepped back for a three to get LA within six at 89-95 with 8:58 left. That was as close as they would get.
OKC answered every flicker. Holmgren hit a three. SGA stepped back for a three to make it 111-95. Benches emptied at the 2:14 mark with Oklahoma City up 120-103 and the starters never came back. The final buzzer made it official: Thunder 125, Lakers 107.
The Numbers
Austin Reaves finished with 31 points on 10-of-16 shooting, a playoff career-high, but five turnovers undermined what was otherwise a spectacular individual performance. LeBron James added 23 points, six assists, and three steals. Rui Hachimura contributed 16. Marcus Smart had 14 points and five assists.
On the other side, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander bounced back with 22 points, four assists, and three steals, quieter than his typical MVP standard but more than enough given the supporting cast around him. Mitchell finished with 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting and was arguably OKC’s most impactful offensive player for stretches of the second half.
Holmgren posted 22 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks. McCain came off the bench and put up 18 on 7-of-11 shooting in a performance that may have been the most damaging of the night.
OKC generated 17 second-chance points to LA’s six and outrebounded the Lakers on the offensive glass 9-7. Thunder shot 55.6 percent from the field. The Lakers shot 50 percent but couldn’t sustain it when it mattered.
What Comes Next
The Lakers are in serious trouble. Down 0-2 with Luka Doncic still sidelined, his initial eight-week timeline from the April 2 hamstring injury places his potential return somewhere around the Western Conference Finals, and with no margin for error, LA has to win four of the next five games to advance. Three of those would have to come against the top seed in the Western Conference.
LeBron James said before the series that his team had to find the paint and shoot with confidence. They did both in the second quarter. For one half, that version of the Lakers showed up. It was not enough, and now the series comes back to Crypto.com Arena for what may be a last stand.
