Lakers Survive OT Thriller in Houston, Take 3-0 Series Lead

HOUSTON, TX — The Los Angeles Lakers came to Toyota Center without Luka Doncic, without Austin Reaves, and without any margin for error in an arena that was rocking from tip-off. What they left with was a 112-108 overtime victory and a commanding 3-0 series lead over the Houston Rockets — a result that required every ounce of resolve they had.

This one was never clean. It was physical, fast-paced, and at times chaotic. But when the moment demanded a response, the Lakers delivered one.

Rui Takes Over From the Jump

Houston made a statement early, jumping out to an 8-7 lead and setting a physical tone unlike anything the Rockets had shown in Games 1 or 2. This was a team playing for its playoff life on home court, and it showed.

Then Rui Hachimura caught fire.

He and LeBron James hit back-to-back threes on consecutive possessions to settle things down, and what followed was a first quarter performance that set the tone for everything that came after. With the game tied at 19-19 midway through the period, the Lakers went on a 9-0 run to push the lead to 29-23, and Rui kept pouring it in. He finished the first quarter with 16 points, already setting a series-high in a single frame before the game was even 12 minutes old. Los Angeles closed the period on top 39-32, with a staggering 14 assists as a team.

It was the best offensive quarter Los Angeles had put together all series, and it came with the crowd at full volume against them.

The Father-Son Moment the Arena Did Not Expect

The second quarter belonged to the Lakers on the interior. They were aggressive in the paint from the opening possession, pushing the lead to 52-43 and then 57-43 as Houston’s defense began to bend.

But the moment that stopped Toyota Center in its tracks came at 7:37. Bronny James stepped into a pull-up three and knocked it down cold. Then, just 26 seconds later, LeBron James looked up and lobbed an alley-oop directly to his son. The arena went completely still before erupting.

A father and son, in the NBA playoffs, connecting on a highlight play. It was the kind of moment that transcends the series.

LeBron carried 16 points into the locker room on 5-of-6 shooting. Rui still had 16. Luke Kennard had quietly put together 10 points and 4 assists. Bronny added 5 off the bench. The Lakers shot 57.5 percent from the field and 61.5 percent from three and they still had not cooled down. At the break, Los Angeles led 63-52.

Houston Punches Back

The Rockets came out of halftime as a different team. They were more physical, more urgent, and the crowd lifted them to a level they had not reached at home all series. Houston went on a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to three at 67-64 with 6:30 remaining in the third. The Lakers were suddenly playing from their heels.

The Rockets kept coming. With 3:25 left in the third, they pulled within one at 70-69. The lead that had felt comfortable was down to a single possession.

LeBron answered with a three-pointer with 59 seconds left to push the margin back out, but it could not mask the larger issue. Los Angeles turned the ball over seven times in the third quarter alone, finishing the period with 15 turnovers as a team. Houston outscored the Lakers 23-17 in the third, their best quarter of the series. The lead heading into the fourth was a precarious 80-75.

Jaxson Hayes had emerged with 10 points off the bench, giving the Lakers a much-needed interior spark. LeBron stood at 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. Rui had 19. Kennard had 12 points and 5 assists. The offense was still producing, but the turnovers were becoming a story.

LeBron Ties It Late, Forces Overtime in Houston

The fourth quarter was everything a playoff game should be. The Lakers led 87-85 with 6:21 left, and Houston tied it at 89 with 5:35 to play. The crowd was deafening. Then, with 4:59 on the clock, Reed Sheppard drained a three to give the Rockets a 92-91 lead. The rookie guard from North Carolina had silenced the visiting bench.

What followed was a sequence of trades, runs, and lead changes that had both benches on their feet. Alperen Sengun was relentless in the paint, finishing with 33 points and 16 rebounds on the night. Amen Thompson added 26 points and was a force in transition. Houston’s interior kept them alive.

LeBron hit a shot to tie it at 95 with just over two minutes left. Back and forth it went, possession by possession, until a LeBron James running three with 13.6 seconds left knotted it at 101. The Rockets had one last chance to win it in regulation. They could not convert. Overtime in Houston.

Marcus Smart Closes the Door

The overtime period opened with both teams feeling each other out. The Lakers established the first real separation when Marcus Smart drained a three to put LA up 104-101. LeBron added an alley-oop dunk off a Marcus Smart assist to push the lead to 107-103, but Sengun would not quit, hitting a turnaround hook to keep Houston within range at 107-105.

Smart kept making the big plays. His free throw line performance in the final minutes was steady and composed under maximum pressure. A steal by Smart led directly to the free throws that gave Los Angeles the breathing room they needed. After Tari Eason fouled Smart with 25.4 seconds left, he calmly sank two to make it 109-105, then 111-105. When Sheppard hit a late three to pull Houston within three at 111-108, Smart knocked down one more free throw to seal it at 112-108.

Marcus Smart finished with 21 points, 10 assists, 5 rebounds, and 5 steals. He was the engine that kept Los Angeles running when the game was at its most chaotic.

By the Numbers

For the Lakers, LeBron James led the way with 29 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals in 45 minutes. Rui Hachimura poured in 22 points. Luke Kennard added 14 points and 6 assists. Jaxson Hayes contributed 12 off the bench. The team shot 48.1 percent from the field and 41.4 percent from three, but committed 21 turnovers — a number that will need to be addressed before Game 4.

For Houston, Sengun was the story of the series. He finished with 33 points and 16 rebounds. Thompson had 26 points and 11 rebounds. Jabari Smith Jr. added 24. Sheppard finished with 17, including the threes that nearly forced a collapse. Houston shot 40.8 percent but outworked Los Angeles on the glass, pulling 31 offensive rebounds across the game and OT.

What Comes Next

The Lakers now lead this series 3-0 and are one win away from a first-round sweep. Game 4 is still in Houston on Sunday. Austin Reaves is hopeful to return. Luka Doncic’s status remains day-to-day.

The Rockets showed on Friday night that they will not go quietly. Sengun and Thompson are good enough to make any game uncomfortable. But Los Angeles has survived every test this series has thrown at them. On a night when everything was stacked against them, playing on the road, shorthanded, and watching a 15-point halftime lead nearly disappear, they still found a way.

That is what good teams do.
