LOS ANGELES — The Brooklyn Nets came to Crypto.com Arena on Friday night with nothing to lose and everything to prove. For three quarters, they proved it. Then Austin Reaves and Luka Dončić remembered they play for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Dončić finished with 41 points — his 15th 40-point game of the season — while Reaves erupted for 15 of his 26 points in the final frame to put away a surprisingly stubborn Nets squad. The Lakers won 116-99, improving to 48-26 and winning 14 of their last 16 games as they open a three-game homestand.
LeBron James added 14 points, six rebounds, and eight assists in a complete floor performance, while Jaxson Hayes provided highlight-reel plays on both ends of the court. It was not the blowout the pre-game odds suggested — but in the end, Los Angeles had more than enough.
A TALE OF TWO HALVES
The Lakers came out in control from the opening tip. Dončić scored the game’s first points off the backboard and quickly established himself as the aggressor, racking up seven of the team’s first 11 points in under three minutes. L.A. opened on a 15-4 run, forcing Brooklyn to burn two early timeouts. A DeAndre Ayton block that led to him scoring at the other end was the kind of energy play that had Crypto.com Arena buzzing.
But the Nets refused to fold. Brooklyn chipped away and got the deficit to 27-25 before back-to-back threes from Dončić and Luke Kennard in the final minute pushed the lead back to 35-30 heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter belonged to Brooklyn. The Nets went on a 16-4 run to seize the lead and had the Lakers looking sluggish, scoring in spurts rather than with any consistent flow. Then came the moment of the first half: with the crowd searching for a spark, LeBron James found his son Bronny on the perimeter — and Bronny James buried the three. The building erupted.
That basket sparked a 10-0 Lakers run over the next two-plus minutes. Just when it looked like L.A. would carry momentum into the half, Nolan Traore answered with a buzzer-beating three for Brooklyn. Halftime: Lakers 61, Nets 59.
THE THIRD QUARTER STRUGGLE
If the second quarter was uncomfortable, the third was downright tense. The Nets matched the Lakers blow for blow, keeping the game within a single possession for most of the period. Dončić reached 30 points around the six-minute mark but could not shake Brooklyn. With 5:23 remaining in the third, the Nets stole possession and briefly took the lead, 75-74.
Moments later, Dončić was assessed a technical foul — his 16th of the season — triggering an automatic one-game suspension. Broadcaster Billy MacDonald captured the sideline mood: ‘Very frustrated Laker squad right now. Big time frustrated.’
Austin Reaves steadied the ship at the free throw line, converting both attempts to put L.A. in front. The Lakers held a slim 85-84 lead heading into the fourth quarter, the outcome very much undecided.
REAVES TAKES OVER
The fourth quarter was a different team. LeBron James opened the period with an alley-oop to Jaxson Hayes that pushed the advantage to 89-86, and L.A.’s defense began to take over — turning stops into easy offense. Los Angeles began to separate.
Reaves connected on a three with just over five minutes remaining to push the lead to nine, and the Nets called timeout in a game that was slipping away.
Brooklyn rested its primary rotation down the stretch, and the Lakers poured it on. Dončić knocked down a three at the 1:29 mark for his 41st point of the evening. Reaves then put the nail in the coffin with another deep three at the 56-second mark. Final: Lakers 116, Nets 99.
The Dončić technical foul looms large. His 16th of the season triggers an automatic one-game suspension if it is upheld. This would mean that the Lakers will need to plan without their leading scorer for their next contest, which would be a significant consideration as playoff seeding races tighten.
Friday’s game was also a reminder that no opponent — regardless of record — is a guaranteed comfortable night. Brooklyn (17-56) dropped its ninth straight and 19th of its last 21, but the Nets gave the Lakers everything they could handle for three quarters. In a playoff-bound team’s calendar, those are the games that test character. On this night, Los Angeles found its resolve in the fourth.
With the win, the Lakers improve to 48-26 and complete the season sweep of Brooklyn. Up next for the Lakers is a Monday home date at Crypto.com Arena against the Washington Wizards. After a back-and-forth Friday night, Los Angeles will look to keep the momentum rolling on its three-game homestand as the regular season winds down and playoff positioning becomes everything.
