HOUSTON — The World Baseball Classic continued today at Minute Maid Park in one of the most anticipated matchups of the tournament between Mexico and the United States.

Team USA are now a step closer to the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic with a 5–3 victory over Mexico on Monday night. An early power surge gave Team USA a comfortable lead before Mexico mounted a late rally, but the United States held on to close out the win.

The matchup carried extra intensity as two of the tournament’s most passionate fan bases filled the ballpark, creating a playoff-like environment. Every scoring play and defensive stop drew loud reactions from the crowd as the game unfolded in front of a packed stadium.

Early momentum favored United States thanks to strong pitching from Paul Skenes, who kept Mexico off the scoreboard through the opening innings. His command on the mound allowed the United States to settle into the game while the offense searched for its first breakthrough.

The game broke open in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of home runs. Aaron Judge launched a solo home run to right field to give the United States a 2–0 lead. Moments later, Roman Anthony delivered the biggest swing of the inning, crushing a three-run homer to right-center field that also scored Kyle Schwarber and Cal Raleigh to extend the lead to 5–0.

Defensively, Bobby Witt Jr. helped preserve the early lead with two highlight-reel plays at shortstop in the fourth and fifth innings, diving to stop balls that looked destined for the outfield.

Mexico began to chip away at the deficit in the middle innings behind a strong performance from Jarren Duran. Duran broke the shutout with a solo home run to left field in the sixth inning, trimming the lead to 5–1. Later in the inning, Joey Meneses drove a ball up the middle that deflected off Brice Turang, allowing Jonathan Aranda to score and cut the deficit to three. Duran then struck again in the eighth inning, launching his second home run of the night to bring Mexico within two runs.

Mexico threatened again in the ninth inning with a runner on second and two outs, but Alek Thomas grounded out to second base for the final out, allowing the United States to secure the win and advance.

With the victory, Team USA moved to 3–0 in Pool B. The race for the final spots remain undecided, as Italy (2–0) and Mexico (2–1) will battle for advancement in the remaining pool games.
