LOS ANGELES — The Lakers returned to the floor tonight against the San Antonio Spurs on the second night of a back-to-back as they looked to respond after a loss to Oklahoma City. They would have to go without Luka Dončić, LeBron James, Austin Reaves and Marcus Smart due to all of them being listed as out before tonight’s matchup against the Spurs. Unfortunately, the result came in the form of a 136-108 loss as the short staffed Lakers did not have an answer for the second place Spurs.

Victor Wembanyama would kick things off early with a 25 point first quarter. It was clear that tonight was going to be another big night for him. Kobe Bufkin, who made his Laker debut tonight made some early contributions along with Jake LaRavia from three but it was not enough as the Spurs had all the control from the jump. The Lakers struggled to keep pace in the first half as the Spurs took command early by capitalizing on the defensive lapses and transition opportunities given up by the short staffed Lakers.

As the second half got underway, we would see more of the Spurs picking up the pace and adding to their lead. At one point, San Antonio went up by as many as 34 points in the third quarter.
Jake LaRavia picked up five fouls by halftime and with 7:35 to go in third, he had fouled out and would join the bench for the rest of the game.

Victor Wembanyama would hit a three pointer with 4:35 left in the third quarter to secure his 40 point game and effectively earn him the rest of the night off as the coaching staff would sit him for the rest of the game.

The score was lop sided in favor of the Spurs all night so by the time the fourth quarter came around, Redick was ready to empty the bench and give some of the young Lakers players an opportunity on the court. Bronny James and Drew Timme made an impact with their time as they scored 12 and 14 points respectively. We also got a glimpse of Adou Thiero who returned after missing all of January with a knee injury. Most notably, he threw down an alley oop dunk from an assist by Bronny James.

The Lakers will have one more opportunity to respond Thursday against the Dallas Mavericks before the All-Star break offers a chance to regroup and get healthy for the second half of the regular season.
